Zelensky Firm on Pre-Conditions for Talks with Russia Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has adamantly stated that he is not prepared to engage in discussions with Russia unless their forces retreat from Ukrainian territory. This declaration comes as Kyiv is conducting an inquiry into a recent deadly assault on Ukrainian troops. Despite Ukraine's counter-offensive efforts, the battlefront has remained largely unchanged for nearly a year, with Russian troops holding positions in the south and east of Ukraine.

Contradicting reports that Western allies are urging negotiations to resolve the prolonged conflict, Zelensky emphasizes that dialogue is impossible with what he calls "terrorists," dismissing the credibility of Russia’s word. His stance was broadcasted on NBC television, underlining his demand for complete withdrawal of Russian forces as a prerequisite for diplomacy.

Ukraine Probes Recent Strike

The strikes come amidst heightened maritime tensions following Russia's suspension of the Black Sea grain deal, which was designed to safeguard civilian maritime traffic.

Israeli forces have intensified their military operations in Gaza, executing "significant" strikes against Hamas amid the escalating conflict that has already lasted a month. UN aid agencies, concerned with the growing number of civilian casualties, have called for a ceasefire, but these calls have so far gone unheeded.

On the ground, fierce combat has unfolded in the densely populated regions of Gaza, with Israeli troops engaged in house-to-house battles with Hamas fighters. This intense warfare has driven approximately 1.5 million residents to seek refuge elsewhere within the territory.

Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli army spokesperson, conveyed to CNN the strategy being implemented: “We are striking Hamas, and we are going stronghold after stronghold, according to our plan, in a systematic effort to dismantle Hamas from its military capabilities." He detailed the involvement of various military divisions and mentioned targeted attacks on Hamas's underground tunnel networks.

A massive bombing campaign was launched by Israel in response to an attack by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in over 1,400 civilian deaths and led to the capture of more than 240 hostages.

The health ministry in Gaza reports a staggering number of casualties, with over 9,770 individuals, primarily civilians, having lost their lives due to the ongoing Israeli offensive.

Desperate Pleas amid Devastation

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on a Middle East tour aimed at addressing the humanitarian needs of Palestinians, has visited several nations but has steered clear of demanding a ceasefire. Instead, he has supported Israel's objective to debilitate Hamas.

During a meeting with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, the plight of Palestinians in Gaza was underscored. Abbas condemned what he termed "genocide and destruction" inflicted by Israeli forces, an act which he said showed a blatant disregard for international law, as reported by Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency.

The conflict has also heightened tensions in the West Bank, where Palestinian health ministry reports indicate that over 150 Palestinians have been killed in confrontations with Israeli forces and settlers since the war's onset.
